Allergy Shots In Houston - McGovern Allergy And Asthma Clinic

Allergy shots in Houston are a great way to stay healthy during allergy season. They are a form of immunotherapy that can help relieve allergy symptoms and improve well-being if you suffer from seasonal allergies. Learn about the process of allergy shots at the clinic, from the initial appointment to receiving regular injections.

What are allergy shots?

Allergy shots are regular injections over a period of time that stop or reduce allergy attacks. They are a form of treatment called immunotherapy. Each allergy shot contains a tiny amount of the specific substance or substances that trigger your allergic reactions. These are called allergens. Allergy shots contain just enough allergens to stimulate your immune system—but not enough to cause an allergic reaction. Over time, the injections can help relieve allergy symptoms. Allergy shots in Houston can also greatly improve your well-being if you suffer from seasonal allergies.

Allergy shots at McGovern Allergy Clinic

Before receiving allergy shots, a patient will need to book an appointment for allergy testing at the clinic. On the day of the appointment, the Houston allergists will discuss past medical history to determine the right allergy test. For the comfort of their patients, McGovern performs allergy testing on the back. Once the test is performed, the McGovern team will look for any redness or swelling on the skin to determine what allergens cause a reaction. When the patient is diagnosed by one of the Houston allergists, the doctor will order an allergy shot order for their specific needs.

You do not need to make an appointment at McGovern Allergy to receive your shot. Come in during allergy shot hours (Monday through Friday 8:30 AM-5:00 PM, and Saturday from 8:30 AM-10:30 AM), weekly for about six to nine months (build-up phase), then once a month thereafter (maintenance phase). Getting an allergy shot only takes a few minutes, but for your safety, you are required to stay in the clinic for 30 minutes to be monitored for adverse reactions. Adverse reactions may include itchiness, redness, or swelling at the injection site, but these reactions should not be bothersome and subside within 24 hours.

To maximize their long-term benefits, allergy shots are given for 3 to 5 years. McGovern Allergy recommends following up with one of the allergists at least twice a year to track progress and adjust allergy shots as necessary.
