Traveling with Allergies

Summer is here and many of us are ready to begin traveling again. However, if you suffer from allergies, traveling can sometimes be difficult if you experience a flare-up in the middle of your vacation. Learn about some helpful tips to help manage your allergies while traveling.

Look for Allergy Friendly Hotels & Resorts

When traveling with allergies, it’s a good idea to look for hotels that offer allergy-friendly services and amenities. When looking for a hotel ask the staff before booking what type of bedding is used in the room, how the rooms are cleaned, if there is smoking or pets allowed, or if air purifiers are used in the room. Visit Your Allergist & Prepare Medications

Before you leave for vacation, visit with your allergist and make sure you have all of your medications filled and ready to take with you for travel. It’s also a good idea to bring additional doses for an extra day or two if you get delayed on your trip. Pack your medications in their original containers if you are flying so they can be properly identified by the Travel Security Administration if your bag is opened.

Food Allergy Preparation

If you have food allergies, pack your own snacks to ensure you have allergy-safe food to eat while traveling. Once you have arrived at your destination and choose to dine out, make sure to ask your waiter all the ingredients in each dish you are looking to order and how it is prepared. Consider downloading apps such as Find Me Gluten Free, Happy Cow, or Allergy Eats to help you find restaurants to better meet your needs. For those with severe food allergies, carry an Epi Pen or two while on your trip.
